This Is April? Chicago Wakes Up To Flurries, Wind Chills In The 20s
CHICAGO (CBS) -- No, you didn't travel back in time while you were sleeping. That really was snow falling in some parts of the Chicago area Wednesday morning.
It was a very chilly start to the day, with temperatures reaching as low as 35 at O'Hare International Airport, and wind chills hitting 24 degrees, both well below normal for late April.
A small band of flurries moved through the area after dawn, dropping a few flakes across the region.
The flurries didn't last very long, and luckily, the ground was too warm for the snow to stick around more than a few minutes, and there was no measurable accumulation.
April snow is hardly unusual for Chicago. The average date for the last snowfall in Chicago is April 20, according to the National Weather Service. Chicago has even seen an inch or more of snow in May on at least two occasions – in 1885, when the city got 2.2 inches from May 1 to May 2; and in 1907, when 1.3 inches fell on May 3.
The latest trace of snow in Chicago was recorded on June 2, 1910.
Wednesday's temperatures will only reach the high 40s or low 50s during the day. Those highs won't get much better the rest of the week, with the low 50s likely through Friday, and lows dropping into the upper 30s at night. Sunday and Monday should bring temperatures a bit closer to normal, with highs of nearly 60 both days.
