Off-Duty Evanston Police Officer Saves Person Attempting Suicide

(CBS) -- An off-duty Evanston police officer found himself in the right place at the right time to save a life, reports WBBM's Bob Roberts.

Detective Ken Carter was leaving the Chili's in downtown Evanston with his fiancée Sunday when she noticed the man atop the parking garage at 1800 Maple.

Carter quickly determined the 22-year-old man was serious about jumping when he tossed his wallet and cell phone to the ground.

The detective called in his desk and got back-up, including a negotiator. They formulated a plan for Carter to crawl up behind the man as the other officers spoke with him.

Carter says he said a prayer first.

"Immediately, when I saw that they had him engaged and he was not looking back I had a chance to grab him from the rear and basically just hold him until the other responding officers assisted me in pulling him off the ledge so it worked out great."

The man struggled but was brought down unhurt. He was taken to Evanston Hospital.
