Overall Chicago Crime Down In May, Shootings Increase

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The city is releasing new crime numbers for the month of May, and Chicago police say overall crime is down seven percent.

However, the city saw an uptick in the number of murders and shootings.

Chicago say there were six more murders last month, compared to May 2014.

There were also 44 more shooting victims.

Police say they have recovered more than 2,700 illegal guns so far this year.

Arrests for illegal gun possession are up 27 percent compared with the same time a year ago.
