Green Sports Alliance Holding Summit In Chicago

(CBS) -- The Green Sports Alliance will be hosting its fifth annual Green Sports Alliance Summit in Chicago starting Monday.

The Green Sports Alliance says the event will bring together teams in venues from across professional and collegiate sports. The theme for the summit at McCormick Place is "Growing the Team: Engaging Fans through Sustainability."

Alan Hershkowitz, president of Green Sports Alliance, says Chicago is a perfect place for Monday's summit because it's such a great sports city -- from an environmental standpoint as well as the performance of its teams.

"The White Sox, the Cubs, the Bears, the United Center, Soldier Field, the Blackhawks, all of these teams and venues are members of the Green Sports Alliance," Herskowitz said. "They are paying attention to the energy they use, they are looking to reduce their energy use. By reducing energy they reduce their carbon emissions. They're donating food after games to help alleviate poverty and to help reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills."

The keynote speaker of the summit is Edmonton Oilers captain Andrew Ference. The summit runs until Wednesday.
