New Images Stun Widow Of Husband Killed In Tent Collapse

WOODALE (CBS) -- Images captured moments before a suburban man was killed when a tent collapsed during a storm have left his widow questioning the action of police officers on the scene.

Just moments before the tent crumpled, killing Steven Nincic, visitors at an event in Wood Dale are seen calmly walking inside.

Then, just a minute later, with the storm fast approaching, Nincic, his wife and two daughters are leaving, but they're re-directed by police and told to take cover under the tent.

Nicole Nincic's attorney described her reaction to the new pictures

"She was shocked to see it because she literally watched herself, her husband, and her the daughters walking out of the grounds," said attorney Lou Cairo.

Two minutes after being told to take cover under the tent, dozens flee as strong winds and rain pummel the area.

Around the same time, at 2:53 p.m., the tent is up and then, it collapses in the 60 mph winds.

A falling tent pole killed Nincic.

His widow is still struggling to understand law enforcement's actions, Cairo said

"She just kept reiterating the same questions, "Why did they tell us to go under the tent? Why didn't they just let us leave?' ''

Cairo says the new video underlines his charge that the town's evacuation plan was never followed.

"An appropriate evacuation plan would have told these police officers that the absolutely last place you'd ever want to direct anybody to go would be underneath this tent."

Wood Dale's evacuation plane for the Prairie Fest called for moving crowds inside the middle school, just 500 feet away.

Those steps were never taken. A Wood Dale spokesman did not return a request for comment.
