Cubs' Jake Arrieta Named NL Pitcher Of The Month For August

(CBS) Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta has been named the National League Pitcher of the Month for August, a stretch that included him firing his first career no-hitter.

Arrieta went 6-0 with a 0.43 ERA in August, becoming the first pitcher since 1974 with six wins and an ERA that low in a month. The highlight of August for Arrieta was firing a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and one walk in a 2-0 win against the Dodgers on Sunday. In 42 1/3 innings, Arrieta had 43 strikeouts and registered a 0.69 WHIP.

Arrieta's 17 wins lead the majors, and his 2.11 ERA is second in all of baseball.

Additionally, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was named the NL Rookie of the Month for August, when he hit .330 with seven homers and 20 RBIs while posting an on-base percentage of .422 and a slugging percentage of .620.
