'Significant' Evidence Recovered At Scene Of Officer's Death

(CBS) – Investigators working to solve the murder of a Fox Lake police officer announced Friday evening they have recovered "significant" new evidence in the case.

"We did recover a significant piece of evidence," Cmdr. George Filenko of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force told reporters at a hastily called news conference.

He declined to elaborate. The evidence was found afternoon of Day 4 of the highly publicized investigation into the shooting death of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph "G.I. Joe" Gliniewicz. The veteran officer and father of four had radioed he was pursuing three suspects – reportedly, two white subjects and an African American – before he was found by backup officers mortally wounded.

Investigators have tracked 100 leads and interviewed 50 people, CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports. The crime has rocked the normally quiet community.

"I expect this in Chicago. Not here. This is just unruly," resident Jim Formby said outside a local shop that was printing memorial signs honoring the slain officer.

Meanwhile, CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot has learned investigators have showed residents pictures of specific individuals, asking if they recognize them.

Investigators went to the Hidden Glenn condominium complex on Wednesday following up on leads. One resident of the complex and one person visiting the development said investigators showed them a specific picture of an African-American man.

"They were just going door to door with the picture of an African American, asking if anybody knew about his whereabouts," resident Sharon Genualdi tells Le Mignot.

This is the first time we have heard of any specific photograph being shown to people as this investigation continues. Law enforcement sources say several photographs have come through leads that have been received.

It's unknown where this most recent photo came from or how it's connected to the case.

Meanwhile, a reward of $50,000 has been offered to solve the case.
