Fares For Suburban Pace Riders Who Use Cash Could Be Going Up

(CBS) -- Fares may be going up for Pace suburban bus riders who use cash.

Pace staff are proposing an increase of 25 cents, to $2 on regular fares, and an increase of 15 cents on reduced fares, to $1.

In a statement, Pace said the change is not being done to generate revenue but to encourage riders to switch to Ventra cards.

Spokesman Patrick Wilmot said that about one in five Pace riders still pay using cash.

The suburban bus agency said that it is following the lead of CTA and the Illinois Tollway system.

The Pace board took no actio on the preliminary proposal and staff may modify it before final approval this fall.
