Seven Injured, Five Critically, After Car Crashes Into Bus Shelter On South Side

(CBS) -- Seven people were injured, five critically, after a car crashed into a bus shelter at 47th and Martin Luther King Drive around 1 p.m. Monday.

According to preliminary information, Chicago police say the driver lost control of the car and struck multiple pedestrians in the Kenwood neighborhood.

Fire officials say five people were transported from the scene in critical condition, two people to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, two to Stroger Hospital and one to Mt. Sinai Hospital. Two other people were transported to the University of Chicago in serious but stable condition.

The car was traveling northbound when it crashed into the shelter, according to witnesses.

Charles Henderson told CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker that the woman was speeding north on King and then crossed over into southbound traffic and aimed at the bus stop.

The driver hit a light pole and then kept going, slamming into the shelter, shattering the glass.

Another witness said two of the victims were not moving when ambulances arrived.

They were treated for about 10 minutes before being transported to the hospital.

Henderson said that when the driver got out of the car, she was disoriented.

"I asked her what happened, and she didn't know," Henderson said.

The driver, a 58-year-old woman, was hospitalized in good conditions. Citations are pending.
