Girl, 10, Two Others Wounded In Woodlawn Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 10-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet, and two other people were wounded in a shooting Sunday afternoon in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
Melanie Irving was with an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man in the 1400 block of East 66th Place around 12:50 p.m. Sunday, when a gunman walked out of a gangway, and started shooting.
Melanie was grazed in the neck, and taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. Her mother was at work when the shooting happened.
"The boy just came from out of nowhere, and just started popping a gun, just started shooting, and that's when I just started running, and then once the bullet hit the tree, I had ducked, and that's when I got a cut that had scraped me," Melanie said.
The woman also was grazed by a bullet. The man was critically wounded. Police said the woman and the girl were not the intended targets.
Maurice Carney, whose daughter was playing with the girl at the time, said all the violence in the city is hardest on the kids.
"I don't think my children are safe, period; you know, living in this neighborhood, being in Chicago, period. We decided to move out of here, and go to Texas. Maybe San Antonio or El Paso; somewhere where you can actually raise your child, and your child can have a future. Here, your child don't have a future," he said.
No one was in custody early Monday.
