Supporters, Opponents Debate Proposed Lucas Museum At Park District Meeting

(CBS) -- Proponents of the proposed Lucas Museum of Narrative Art dominated the public comment part of the park district's board meeting this afternoon.

That area between McCormick Place and Soldier Field: should it be turned into a museum and green space?

"What it is currently is an asphalt parking lot that benefits 50,000 people 20 times a year who can afford to attend Bear games and concerts," said Francisco Valentin was one of the many museum supporters. "The beautiful museum will bring hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to this great city."

Against the museum: Robert Nelis.

"A hundred years from now nobody is going to know who George Lucas was. A hundred years from now nobody will even know what narrative arts look like," said Nelis. "In a hundred years, the lakefront will be here. And a hundred years from now this ugly upside down snow cone will be here."

This was the first public hearing on the proposed museum.

There's another park district hearing Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock.
