Rick Hahn: Robin Ventura Will Be Back As White Sox Manager In 2016

(CBS) Despite a disastrous 2015 campaign after a big-spending offseason, White Sox manager Robin Ventura is expected back for the 2016 campaign, general manager Rick Hahn confirmed Friday.

The news doesn't come as much of a surprise, given owner Jerry Reinsdorf's loyalty to Ventura, but Ventura had come under fire from some for failing to light a spark in an underachieving team that had a deep postseason run in mind when the year began. Earlier Friday, the White Sox fired bench coach Mark Parent, who had been with the club for four seasons.

Chicago is 74-85 entering the final series of the season, against Detroit at U.S. Cellular Field this weekend.

The 48-year-old Ventura is 295-350 as he closes his fourth season as the White Sox manager. The White Sox haven't made the playoffs under his watch.

Ventura's overseeing a team that's trying to rebuild on the fly while simultaneously competing, an approach Hahn has spoken to on multiple occasions. Entering 2015, Chicago upped its payroll to nearly $120 million after signing outfielder Melky Cabrera, first baseman/DH Adam LaRoche, closer David Robertson and reliever Zach Duke in the offseason while also trading for right-hander Jeff Samardzija. As a whole, those moves didn't pay off, with each player struggling, some for longer stretches than others.

White Sox assistant hitting coach Harold Baines is also being moved to a new role with the organization -- likely an ambassador role -- Hahn said. All other coaches are expected back in their current positions.
