Motorcyclist killed in Woodlawn crash
(STMW) -- A motorcyclist was killed Friday afternoon when a driver — who was later charged with DUI — pulled a U-turn and caused a crash in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
About 3 p.m., 30-year-old Frederic Sims was driving his motorcycle westbound in the 900 block of East 67th Street when a Ford Fusion that was also traveling westbound performed an illegal U-turn in the middle of the street, authorities said.
The motorcycle then collided with the Fusion, according to Chicago Police.
Sims, of the 2600 block of East 77th Street, was pronounced dead at the scene less than 30 minutes later, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. An autopsy Saturday ruled his death an accident.
Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the Fusion, 21-year-old Jamari Triggs, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
Triggs, of the 6400 block of South Kenwood, was charged with misdemeanor DUI any amount of drug and cited for failure to carry a license, not having a valid registration and U-turn within 100-feet of an intersection. He is next scheduled to appear in court Nov. 25.
