Police: 6 Arrested For Robbing, Beating People At Elgin Restaurant

(STMW) -- Three men and three teenage boys were arrested for robbing and beating people Friday night at a restaurant in northwest suburban Elgin, according to police.

Officers were called to a restaurant in the 100 block of Dundee Avenue in Elgin at 9:20 p.m. for reports of a group of people throwing chairs and damaging property, according to a statement from Elgin police.

When the officers arrived the saw a group of six people outside the restaurant kicking someone who was lying on the ground, police said. The six people ran away but were arrested a short time later.

Further investigation revealed the six had stolen a cellphone from an employee in the restaurant while they were throwing chairs around, police said. When they left the restaurant they attacked the person in the parking lot and stole his phone.

Three 18-year-old Elgin men – Keith Hines, Derrick Whitehead and Dejuan Bertha – were each charged with aggravated battery and mob action, police said.

Additionally, Hines, of the 2400 block of Emily Lane, was charged with robbery and resisting arrest, according to police. Bertha, of the 300 block of South Liberty Street, was also charged with robbery. Whitehead, of the 400 block of Hickory Place, was charged with attempted robbery.

They were all expected to appear in Kane County bond court Saturday morning, according to police. Three 16-year-old boys were also arrested in connection with the incident and were taken to the Kane County Youth Home.
