Evanston Cracking Down On Crime Centered On 11 Properties

(CBS) -- The city of Evanston is cracking down on crime centered around almost a dozen apartment buildings and houses.

Almost all the properties are multi-unit rental apartment buildings. At one, for example, police have been called there 76 times over the past year.

"Including one homicide, three shots fired, five disturbances, a burglary, a drug investigation - and it's a known hangout for some local gang members," said Evanston Police Commander Joe Dugan. "We've identified 11 properties that are chronic problems in the community."

Commander Dugan says police will be working with other city departments to try to turn things around at those 11 properties.

Some are calling for a tougher city nuisance ordinance, including more inspections of properties.
