Cubs Add 4 Players To 40-Man Roster
(CBS) The Cubs have added four players to the 40-man roster, just shy of the deadline to protect them from becoming eligible for the Rule 5 Draft.
The team selected the contracts of infielder Jeimer Candelario, catcher Willson Contreras, right-handed pitcher Pierce Johnson and infielder Dan Vogelbach from Double-A Tennessee.
Candelario, 21, batted .277 with 10 home runs and 64 RBI in 128 games, finishing the season in Double-A. Contreras, 23, was the Cubs' Minor League Player of the Year, batting .333 with eight homers and 75 RBIs in 126 games with Tennessee.
Johnson, 24, who was the Cubs' compensation-round pick in 2012, is 22-13 with a 2.50 ERA in 65 career appearances. Vogelbach, 22, batted .272 with seven homers and 39 RBIs in 76 games with Tennessee last year. He was the Cubs' second-round pick in 2011.
With the moves, the Cubs' 40-man roster currently stands at 37.
