Chicago Galaxy Embraces Latest 'Star Wars' Installment

It's Here, Finally: The New 'Star Wars' Movie

(CBS) -- Christmas arrived a week early for "Star Wars" fans as "The Force Awakens" officially opened Thursday night in Chicago.

A small, but very dedicated group of fans got in line Thursday at the AMC River East many hours before showtime.

Several of the faithful were wearing "Star Wars" sweaters and hoodies. One fan, Rob Snyder, was even wearing a full Darth Vader costume.

He actually drove all the way up from Louisville to see "The Force Awakens" with his  friends.

AMC and other cinema chains have restrictions about what "Star Wars" fans can bring in and wear so that views -- and safety -- are not compromised.

Several people also admitted to WBBM that they were skipping work in order to see the movie but they said their bosses knew what they were doing and considered it an "excused absence."
