Reports: Cubs Reach Deals With 6 Arbitration-Eligible Players

(CBS) The Cubs reached one-year deals with six of their seven arbitration-eligible players Friday, according to the Chicago Tribune and various reports.

Reliever Hector Rondon and the team settled on a one-year, $4.2-million deal, according to Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan. Rondon had 30 saves, a 1.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in a strong 2015 season, and he enters the new season in line to be the team's stopper once again.

"He did a great job for us last year," general manager Jed Hoyer said.

"He goes into spring training, certainly, with an upper hand on that job. But I think as we've seen last year, we went through a bunch of different closers, and I think (manager) Joe (Maddon) has shown he's going to ride the hot hand. He's kind of come in and out of that role a few times and done a great job. So yeah, he has the upper hand on it, but he's obviously got to pitch well to stay in that role, and Joe's going to use guys in different ways. I think Hector knows that, and the rest of our bullpen knows it."

Left-handed reliever Travis Wood agreed to a $6.17-million deal, and right-handed reliever Justin Grimm and the Cubs settled at $1.275 million, the Tribune reported. Right-hander Adam Warren -- acquired from the Yankees in the Starlin Castro deal and in the competition for a back-end rotation spot -- settled with the Cubs at $1.7 million, Baseball America reported.

Right-handed reliever Pedro Strop settled for $4.4 million, the Sun-Times reported, and outfieder Chris Coghlan settled at $4.8 million according to MLB.com.

Ace pitcher Jake Arrieta is the Cubs' remaining player left unsigned. On Thursday, Arrieta was vague when asked whether agent Scott Boras and the Cubs are talking about a long-term deal.

Friday is the deadline for teams to agree to deals with players. If no deal is reached, they'll go to arbitration hearings in February after exchanging salary figures.
