9-1-1 Tapes Released In Evanston Home Invasion

(CBS) – A Northwestern University student got to a place of safety then quietly made a call for help when an intruder broke into the Evanston apartment she shares with three others.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reviews newly released audio tapes of her Feb. 2 call to emergency dispatchers.

"I'm very scared," the student whispers to the 9-1-1 operator. "Please hurry, I'm hiding."

A man had broken into the apartment. Police say the burglar woke up one of the sleeping students, and she screamed.

He threatened to shoot her and took items, such as a computer and wallet.

That's when the student on the 9-1-1 recording took to the closet and made her telephone call.

"It scared the living daylights out of them. They didn't go to class for a couple of days," a friend of the students tells Ross.

The victims were unharmed. Police found evidence, DNA samples and identified at least one person of interest -- but it wasn't enough to lead to charges yet.
