No Injuries In Small Fire At Trump Tower

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago firefighters responded to a small fire at Trump International Hotel & Tower on Thursday.

First District Fire Chief Timothy Sampey said the fire started in a sealed metal trash compactor on the 50th floor in the residential portion of the skyscraper around 9 a.m.

A Kansas City man who was staying in the hotel at Trump Tower said he ran downstairs when he heard the fire alarm going off.

"I didn't take the elevator, I ran down the stairs. I didn't want to be stuck in that elevator. So, yeah, I just kind of freaked out and ran downstairs," he said.

The building's sprinkler system kept the fire under control until firefighters could put it out completely. Sampey said people in the building were urged to stay in place, rather than evacuate, and everyone was very cooperative.

"Nobody was hurt in this. No firefighters were hurt. No civilians were hurt. Again, everybody did a nice job. The building worked together with the Fire Department, which quickly extinguished the fire," Sampey said.

Firefighters used mops and squeegees to keep the water away from elevator shafts after the fire was out.
