606 Trail Robberies Have Residents On Alert

(CBS) --A series of robberies on a trail on the Northwest Side have residents on alert.

The 606 trail runs through the Logan Square and Bucktown neighborhoods. Three armed robberies in less than two weeks on the 606, an alarming trend that concerns those who use the Bloomingdale Trail, reports CBS 2's Sandra Torres.

The first incident happened on February 19 in the 3200 hundred block of Bloomingdale Avenue around 11:30 p.m.

The victim posted on Reddit to warn other bikers saying, "...young guys in hoodies walking the other direction jumped in front of my bike and the biggest guy took me off my bike in a headlock."

Police confirm they stole his phone wallet and bike. Similar incidents were reported this week, with the latest happening Friday night at 2558 W. Bloomingdale Ave.

Jason Shanley bikes through the trail often, knowing there's always a risk.

"I don't think of the 606 any differently than I think of the Lakeshore Bike Path and there are times when it's more or less dangerous to be on that too," Shanley said.

While the incidents are not deterring people from using the trail, many are thinking twice before going after dark.

"I don't think people should be here at night," said Kristina Donash.

"Anything after the sun goes down would probably be a time that I would, especially if you are alone, would definitely not walk anywhere in the city of Chicago," said Ali Boulden.

Police say the suspects are two to four black men, 16 to 21 years old, 5'7" to 6'2" tall, weighing 125 to 180 pounds, short hair, possible shaved, wearing black, gray or blue hooded sweatshirts.

Anyone with information should call Chicago Police.
