At Least Three Arrested When Teachers March Spills Onto Lake Shore Drive

(CBS) – Three people were arrested Friday when a Chicago Teachers Union rally and march went from Chicago's Loop to Lake Shore Drive, police said.

Thousands of participants showed up for a rally that began around 4 p.m. at the James R. Thompson Center, the purpose of which was to demand better funding for public education in Illinois. Marchers then proceeded in the rain, east through Grant Park.

Some participants ended up on the Drive, momentarily stopping traffic. Chicago Police Department's News Affairs division said three people were arrested at Monroe Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. A fourth person received a ticket, but details weren't available.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards witnessed the display of civil disobedience on the busy road, which drew a quick response from police and mounted officers.

It wasn't clear if any of the detainees were members of the CTU.

Union members staged a one-day strike Friday and held several events across the city.
