Richmond Greyhound Bus Station Shooter From Suburban Aurora

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The gunman who opened fire at a Greyhound bus station in Richmond, Va., killing a state police trooper, is from west suburban Aurora, CBS affiliate WTVR is reporting.

Sources tell the station that the shooter, who was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police, is James Brown III, 34. Later Friday, police officially confirmed Brown was the gunman.

Brown had an extensive criminal record, including an attempted murder charge from 2001 for which he was sentenced to four years in prison, and was well known to police in Aurora.

After serving that sentence, was also convicted on separate cocaine and heroin charges and sent back to jail. He was also sentenced in 2011 on aggravated battery charges, according to Kane County arrest records.

"He had a lot of anger about the police in the past," Browns' aunt, Edith Brown, told the station. "He pretty much thought he wanted to be infamous . . . in terms of having a showdown. He always praised those people who got into shootouts with police."

Trooper Chad P. Dermyer, 37, died Thursday after being shot multiple times, according to Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Steven Flaherty. Two civilians, both women, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

Flaherty said investigators don't know what sparked the shooting.

Dermyer had been participating with about a dozen other troopers in a training exercise at the bus station when a brief encounter with the gunman quickly turned violent, he said.
