Cubs Activate Javier Baez, Send Down Munenori Kawasaki

(CBS) The Cubs have activated infielder Javier Baez from the 15-day disable list and sent infielder Munenori Kawasaki down in a corresponding move.

Baez had been dealing with left thumb injury that he suffered in spring training while sliding head first into a base. His recovery was then delayed a few days after he was clipped in the head by a pitch in a game in Arizona.

Baez figures to be used as a super-utilityman, as he has plenty of experience at second base, shortstop and third base. He also played the outfield in winter ball and worked on that element in spring training.

Baez hit .289 with a .733 OPS in 28 games with the Cubs in 2015. Kawasaki appeared in two games for the Cubs, going 1-of-2 at the plate.

Baez will be available when the Cubs host the Rockies on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
