Cubs' Kyle Schwarber Undergoes Surgery On Left Knee

(CBS) Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber underwent surgery on his left knee in Dallas on Tuesday, and the operation went as expected with Schwarber expected to make a full recovery.

Schwarber had a reconstruction of his ACL and repair of his LCL by Dr. Daniel Cooper, the head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys, the Tribune reported.

The 23-year-old Schwarber suffered the severe injuries in a collision with teammate Dexter Fowler while tracking a fly ball on April 7 at Arizona. He will miss the entire 2016 season.

Speaking earlier Tuesday on 670 The Score, Cubs manager Joe Maddon was looking forward to getting Schwarber back around his teammates, to help keep his spirits up and have Schwarber's infectious attitude around the rest of the Cubs.

"The biggest things from our side is we want to get him back to Chicago, whenever that's possible, when he's able to come back and just be in the clubhouse," Maddon said.

"He's a really big part of our group. You don't want him to become disconnected in any way ... The guys love having him around. He's such an authentic person."

Schwarber hit .246 with 16 homers, 43 RBIs and an .842 OPS in 69 games as a rookie in 2015. The Cubs had planned to continue Schwarber's catching development by having him behind the plate in right-hander Jason Hammel's starts. As he rehabs, Schwarber will also continue the intellectual development of catching, as he'll sit in on meetings on days Hammel starts, pitching coach Chris Bosio said recently.
