Man In Custody After Police Fire Shots In Evanston

(CBS) -- Evanston Police say a 25-year-old man is in custody after an almost hour-long confrontation with officers Tuesday afternoon.

It was a neighbor who called police to say that something didn't look right at the big supposedly empty house in the 1300 block of Asbury in Evanston, says Commander Joe Dugan.

Inside, Dugan says officers found the man and as they tried to arrest him, he fought them.

An officer used a Taser and Dugan says the man produced a BB gun, which at the time looked like a handgun and an officer fired shots at the man.

That's when the man ran into another part of the house and later ran out the door. An officer outside fired shots at him.

Dugan says the man dropped his gun and was arrested.

He says the man wasn't hit by any gunshots and he says no officers were injured but were traumatized.

"It's bad enough to fight with a guy, let alone when he pulls out a handgun," Dugan said. "It's very traumatic for the officers."

Dugan says people in the neighborhood were asked to stay indoors while all this was going on.
