One Dead, Seven Wounded In Chicago Shootings Tuesday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One man was killed and at least seven other people were wounded in shootings Tuesday across Chicago.

A man was shot to death and four other people were injured when someone opened fire on a group filming a rap video in a Gresham neighborhood park on the South Side.

A group was filming in Foster Park in the 1400 block of West 84th Street at 2:19 a.m. when someone approached them and started shooting, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. The shooter then ran away.

Damond A. Dawson, 23, was shot in the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. He lived in the 8400 block of South Justine Street.

A 19-year-old woman was shot twice in the groin and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in serious condition, Gaines said.

Three more people who were also injured in the shooting later showed up at Christ Medical Center, Gaines said. A 20-year-old man was shot nine times in the leg and shoulder; a 25-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the leg; and an 18-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back. Their conditions were all stabilized.

In the most recent non-fatal shooting, an 18-year-old man was shot while walking in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood. A male wearing a black hoodie approached the man in the 3400 block of West Chicago at 6:09 a.m. and fired shots, striking the man in both legs and the left side of his torso. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Three hours earlier, a 17-year-old showed up at Community First Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, after being shot in the Belmont Central neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The teenager suffered gunshot wounds to the left calf and right thigh after being shot in the 5600 block of West Schubert Avenue at 3 a.m. Police said the teen is a documented gang member and is being uncooperative with investigators.

In the day's first shooting, a man was critically wounded in a West Side Austin neighborhood drive-by shooting.

The 24-year-old was standing outside in the 5500 block of West Congress Parkway at 12:05 a.m. when a vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots. He suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and a graze wound to the leg, and was listed in critical condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, police said.
