Chicago Cop In Deadly Shooting: 'I Feel Terrible About It To This Day'

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Police Officer who fatally shot two people on the West Side is speaking for the first time about the deadly altercation the day after Christmas.

"I feel terrible about it to this day, and will for the rest of my life," Robert Rialmo said in an interview with The Marshall Project, "but people don't know how it was to be in that situation, and 'sorry' will never cut it."

The story by Simone Weichselbaum, titled "The 'Chicago Model' Of Policing Hasn't Saved Chicago', examines Chicago policing strategies and policies as the city is facing one of the most violent years in decades.

Rialmo addresses the city's experiments with various law enforcement and theories: "They could send Sigmund Freud on some of these calls, and he wouldn't be able to do anything."

On Dec. 26, police were called to an apartment building in the 4700 block of West Erie Street for a domestic incident involving Quintonio LeGrier and his father. Police said they "were confronted by a combative subject" holding a baseball bat and that an officer (Rialmo) fired his weapon.

Quintonio LeGrier, 19, and Bettie Jones, 55, were both shot dead.

LeGrier was shot in the chest, back, right buttock and left arm. He suffered a graze wounds to his right shoulder and chest.

The single bullet that struck Jones, severed her heart, aorta and esophagus.

Jones, a neighbor, was not involved in the dispute.
