Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson Calls On Residents To Band Together To Help Fight Crime

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is encouraging city residents to band together to help police fight crime and he's promising he will make the police department better, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Johnson got a standing ovation at a gathering of Block Clubs in the Gresham neighborhood where he spent 15 years as a police officer and commander.

"If we want to make a great Chicago, we have to take back our city house by house, block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, community by community," Johnson said. "The strength in this city is sitting right here. These gangbangers ain't got nothing on us. When we fill the streets, fill the parks, fill the schools, then they got nothing coming."

He said events like the Block Club event are how the police department rebuilds trust in the community and he asked for help, saying the average age of shooters is 15 or 16. He asked how many 15 or 16 year olds own homes or pay rent, making the point that parents need to be parents.
