Jason Heyward Returning For Cubs, Will Bat 2nd Against Cardinals

(CBS) Having missed the past three games with a torso injury, Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward will return Tuesday night against the Cardinals, manager Joe Maddon told the Spiegel and Goff Show.

Heyward suffered a contusion in his right rib and hip area while making a spectacular diving catch in the first inning of a win at San Francisco on Friday. He'll bat in his usual second spot in the order, Maddon said. Ben Zobrist will return to the fifth spot, with Jorge Soler batting sixth.

Heyward's struggling at the plate, hitting just .225 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 37 games. Maddon has continued to laud Heyward's .329 on-base percentage and expressed confidence that he'll hit better as well.

"Here's how I look at it: He's really good at getting on base," Maddon said. "Right now, he hasn't been as good at driving in runs, so I prefer him being in that two hole setting up KB (Kris Bryant) and Riz (Anthony Rizzo). So if you put him below that, I think you're negating a lot of what he's doing really well right now.

"I also know that he's going to start hitting and missing defenders. It's just a matter of time. I think it's important to maintain the level of confidence that he has."

First pitch between the Cubs and Cardinals from Busch Stadium is set for 6:10 p.m. The pregame show starts at 5:35 p.m. on 670 The Score.
