Family Reunited With Lost Dog After 4 Years
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A long lost dog was reunited with its owners Tuesday night, thanks to a couple Good Samaritans who flagged down Chicago police.
Police said two concerned citizens found the brown and white Chihuahua wandering the streets near 126th and Michigan around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, and stopped officers on patrol in the area.
The officers brought the dog to the Calumet District police station, and decided to check it for an identifying microchip.
They took the dog to the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge, and confirmed the dog did have a microchip containing its owners' address.
The officers contacted the family, and offered to meet them at the Calumet District station to reunite them with the dog, which had been reported missing in 2012.
Gloria Martinez told CBS 2 the dog, named "Chiquito", ran away during her daughter's birthday party on June 16, 2012.
In those four years, "Missing" signs went up an came down, but a mother's guilt and grief lingered.
Until today.
"Thank you, you made our family happy again," said Martinez.
The dog appeared to be in good health, and police said the family was "joyful and astonished" to be reunited with their pet after nearly four years.
