Cubs Pitching Coach Chris Bosio: Gerardo Concepcion Showed No Fear In Debut

(CBS) Cubs left-hander Gerardo Concepcion made his big league debut Tuesday night in a loss to the Cardinals.

Coming on with two outs in the sixth inning, the 24-year-old Concepcion worked 1 1/3 perfect innings, striking out two in the process. So what did Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio like the most?

"He didn't seem star struck at all," Bosio told the Mully and Hanley Show on Wednesday morning. "Quite frankly, he was pitching like he had no idea who he was facing."

How long Concepcion sticks in the big leagues remains to be seen, but with left-hander Clayton Richard struggling and getting put on the disabled list with a blister, Concepcion should have his chance to impress. The Cubs are keeping the big picture and championship goal in mind, trying to get youngsters' feet wet and test their composure.

For Concepcion's part, he's made big strides already this season.

"It started with fastball command with the kid," Bosio said. "He had a tough time locating that thing (in the past). He'd just kind of spray it around. But as he showed last night, he has the ability to get the ball in on lefties, being able to get the ball away with occasional spin and a decent change-up that's still developing. Last night, he had some fun, and it was fun watching him go out there, feel free and attack."

The Cubs signed Concepcion to a five-year deal back in 2012.
