Organization Sends Gift Bags To Cancer Patients

(CBS) – We all know the phrase, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

That's exactly what one northwest suburban woman did after getting diagnosed with cancer.

CBS 2's Sandra Torres reports.

Jill Peltier is behind the Lemons of Love care packages for cancer patients. She came up with the idea two years ago.

"I had to do six months of chemo therapy, and while I was doing chemotherapy I started putting gifts together for patients," she says.

The gifts included everything a patient needs while they're going through chemotherapy treatments, such as tissues, snacks and hand lotion.

That's how the non-profit effort came about.

Thanks to fundraisers, more than 2,300 patients across the country received the gifts, including Lauren Lopriore.

"I was under chemo for four months," she says.

It was a kind gesture that left a positive impression from a not-so-positive experience.

"My eyes lit up," she says. "Being able to have things that made me comfortable within this bag was great."

Lemons of Love will have a golf outing fundraiser next Friday at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling.
