Kids Bring Get Well Cards To Home Of 6-Year-Old Girl Shot In Englewood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The family of a 6-year-old girl who was shot while playing on her porch in Englewood received a visit from a group of children bearing get well cards.

About 40 kids in the Summer Safe Haven program at Holy Zion Church marched a few blocks to the home of Tacarra Morgan, chanting "Don't shoot! I want to grow up."

The children brought get well cards for Tacarra, who was still recovering at Comer Children's Hospital two days after she was shot in the stomach.

"I'm proud of this, what you all are doing. I'm double proud of this. I'm proud to see somebody love one another," said her grandfather, Arthur Morris. "She'll read every one of these."

The kids formed a circle in the street in front of Tacarra's family home and prayed.

"You spared the baby's life, and God we just want to say thank you right now," they said.

Police said three vehicles, including a white SUV, turned into the area and targeted a group on the block.

First Deputy Supt. John Escalante said the shooting appeared to be gang related.

"This is a child, like any other child in the city of Chicago, who should be able to enjoy a warm summer day, and play in the front of her house, and play on her porch with her family," he said.

Tacarra was taken to Comer Children's Hospital after the shooting, and underwent surgery. Her family said the surgery went well, and doctors said she should make a full recovery.

Morris said Tacarra has told him she is ready to come home.

"She didn't even cry when she got shot. Didn't pass out. When she left … she was still talking. She's stronger than some grown people," he said.
