Barbers Unite To Stop Violence In Englewood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's an unusual place to get a trim, but dozens of barbers set up shop in a park in Englewood on Sunday.

Sunni Ali Powell wanted to host a free haircut event even before a man was shot to death in his barbershop in May.

That incident spurred him to act faster to get colleagues and competitors to volunteer their time to give haircuts to kids and seniors.

Powell says he's had to work to rebuild the confidence of his clients and the community after the shooting, one of many in Englewood.

Cacha says having a kid in her barber chair gives her a chance to ask about their hopes and dreams and to encourage them to pursue them by staying out of gangs.

Antonio was sporting a squiggly design on the side of his head after getting a haircut.

With grills cooking up food, a DJ playing music and at least one rapper performing, the event in sunny Ogden park felt like a block party.
