Mayor Meets With Family Of Child Critically Injured In Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Emanuel met Wednesday evening with the family of the 10-year-old boy who was shot in the back Monday night on the porch of his family's West Side home.

He said the show of concern is something Tavon Tanner's family and the families of other youthful victims of gun violence will never see from the shooters.

"I will guarantee you one thing, the gang bangers that shot at the porch will not visit, will not call, they will have no moral remorse and no moral accountability," Emanuel said.

The visit was the third time the mayor has reached out to Tavon Tanner's family since he was critically wounded Monday night.

He spoke Tuesday and again Wednesday morning with the boy's mother, Mellanie Washington.

Tavon remains heavily sedated at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The mayor said he supports legislation, introduced by State Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago), that would impose harsher penalties on repeat gun offenders.

"He shouldn't be in there," said Madelyne Smith, Tavon's godmother. "He shouldn't be in there. He should be at home playing.

"The bullet is still lodged inside his chest and at this point they're holding off on any future surgeries and allowing his body to heal from some of the surgeries they've done, including removing his spleen."
