Back Of The Yards Paints A New Picture For The Neighborhood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago Alderman and several community leaders came together Friday morning to unveil a new mural, said to change the image of the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

15th Ward Alderman Ray Lopez said the goal of the mural, which covers two blocks, was to celebrate the rebirth and reclamation of Back of the Yards, WBBM's Andy Dahn reports.

"To change the narrative of our neighborhoods that are so often negative," Lopez said. "Today, we're here to celebrate something positive."

The mural provides the neighborhood with a fresh outlook of love and peace, Lopez said.

Rain poured down Friday morning on the freshly painted street, but Lopez said that's symbolic.

"This gives us an opportunity to cleanse the image of our community, to start fresh and start anew."

Michael of Englewood helped paint the mural, which he says is a great way to spread positivity and bring people of different communities together.

"It makes me feel like I'm actually making a difference in this world full of pain, hatred, violence and death right now."

The McCormick Foundation provided the Back of the Yards committee with a grant to help make the project possible.
