At Least 1 Injured After Gunman Opens Fire From South Side Rooftop

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Witnesses describe the incident as an assassination attempt that happened in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood in broad daylight on Saturday.

A gunman reportedly opened fire from a rooftop near 87th and Sangamon streets, aiming at the street, injuring at least one person, Chicago police said.

This shooting has some rattled for a number of reasons. Besides the fact that it happened in the middle of the day, around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, it appears as if the shooter acted with a plan and a purpose, CBS2's Jeremy Ross reports.

Cell phone video shows officers on a business' rooftop, where a man--who asked not to be named--believes a planned cold-blooded murder plot was underway.

"They were trying to assassinate some guys," the man said.

"There could have been some type of sniper up there. Don't know if this person was the target," Community Activist Andrew Holmes.

Holmes says a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg. Police say the man was a documented gang member.

But it's what investigators found on the rooftop that added chills to an already chilling display. There were two bullet-proof vests and a mask on the roof, Holmes said. Officials are hoping nearby surveillance cameras can help piece the story together and identify the suspects.

"Who ran off of that roof? Who had the bullet-proof vest? Who had the mask? They can put that picture out to the community, and someone can identify these perpetrators," Holmes said.

Police say the man who was shot drove himself to a hospital. His condition, as of Saturday night, was unknown.

Chicago police are still investigating the shooting. No one is in custody.
