Girl, 6, Wounded In West Pullman Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 6-year-old girl shot in the West Pullman neighborhood Sunday night.
She was the second 6-year-old shot in Chicago in less than a week.
India Tinker was in a car with two other kids and a female adult relative around 9 p.m. in the 12000 block of South Perry Avenue, when shots were fired. Her great aunt's sister was dropping the kids off at a relative's home, after they had just been at the beach, when a gunman approached the car.
"He knew they were standing there, because of some things he said. He just started shooting, about 5-6 times. I didn't get to the door. I heard it, because that's my room on that side. So by the time I could get up, she had her phone, my sister called me, she says, 'Pam, I think this baby got shot,'" Pamela Collins said.
India was shot in the arm. She initially was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, but later was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in good condition.
Her family said the bone in her right arm shattered, and she might need surgery.
Collins said she's just thankful the injury wasn't worse.
India's uncle, who identified himself only as Kevin, said the shootings have to stop.
"I'm glad she's alright. I swear I'm so glad she was spared, because it's a lot of people that wasn't able to stand her and be able to say that," he said. "I'm just glad she's alright. Like I say, she's 6 years old, but she's going to be alright. It ain't no major damage done."
No one was in custody early Monday. Area South detectives were investigating.
