Chris Bosio On Cubs' Defense: 'Nothing Really Surprises Me'

(CBS) The Cubs' quality defense was on full display in a doubleheader sweep of the Brewers on Tuesday at Wrigley Field, highlighted by one of the plays of the year when first baseman Anthony Rizzo climbed the wall ledge down the right-field line to catch a ball descending on the first row of seats.

That wasn't it, though. In the opener, shortstop Addison Russell made a great play in the hole and Rizzo and Cubs starter Trevor Cahill teamed up for an acrobatic 3-1 putout on a hard-hit ball down the first-base line that sent Rizzo rolling in foul territory and Cahill nearly doing the splits to catch the toss.

While it isn't always quite that highlight reel-worthy, the Cubs defense has been solid all season, to the point pitching Chris Bosio

"Nothing really surprises me with these guys," Bosio said in an interview on the Mully and Hanley Show on Wednesday morning.

In spring training, the Cubs conduct defensive drills with a wealth of odd twists -- not necessarily Rizzo's wall-climbing antics, but they do work on completing plays in unusual fashion.

"We have a station in spring training where I hit fungoes to the pitchers, and I get creative -- we call them Jordan Drills -- and there's one-hop feeds to the pitchers, you have to catch the next one behind your back, you have to throw the next one behind your back, one-hop stops," Bosio said. "I mean, it's everything you can do almost on a basketball court on the baseball field, just for that reason. Because you get caught in so many awkward, different moves that it's reactionary and you just try to use your athleticism to get it done.

"Justin Grimm with the catch between his legs (earlier this season), we worked at it. That's one of our stations that we work on.

"The Rizzo thing ... that was crazy."
