Arrest Warrant Issued For Suspect In Shooting Near U. Of I. Campus

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police have issued an arrest warrant for an 18-year-old man wanted for a deadly shooting near the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.

George Korchev, 22, of Mundelein, was shot early Sunday while he was walking in the 300 block of East Green Street in Champaign, after a fight inside an apartment building spilled onto the street. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Carle Foundation Hospital. Three others were wounded in the shooting. Police said none were involved in the fight.

Champaign police said a preliminary identification has identified 18-year-old Robbie M. Patton as the person responsible for the shooting. An arrest warrant has been issued for Patton on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, policed said.

Police said they also are trying to identify several people who were in a nearby parking lot at the time of the shooting, as they might be witnesses. Police have released surveillance video from the parking lot in an attempt to track down potential witnesses.

Approximately 30 minutes after the Green Street shooting, Champaign police responded to another shooting in the 700 Block of South State Street.

Upon arrival, officers located a victim who was transported to an area hospital for a non-critical gunshot wound. Police believe the two shootings were related.
