Another Racially Charged Confrontation Erupts In Mount Greenwood

(CBS) -- The ugly, racially charged confrontations between Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter demonstrators resumed Tuesday night in Mount Green wood, where police officers fatally shot a black Indiana motorist over the weekend.

The groups that clashed on Election Night were larger than the ones that previously generated tension in the Southwest Side neighborhood.

At issue is the officer-involved shooting death of Joshua Beal, 25, who died in a road-rage incident Saturday. Police say Beal, of Indianapolis, pulled a gun after off-duty police personnel tried to shoo him away from parking in front of a fire station in the 3100 block of West 111th St.

Beal's advocates say that account is false, even though a picture appears to show Beal with a drawn weapon.

Groups of residents identifying themselves under the Blue Lives Matter banner -- in support of police officers and the dangers they face on the job -- have accused the Black Lives Matter demonstrators of distorting the facts.

Beal's brother, Michael, was ordered held on $500,000 bond Tuesday. He allegedly attacked one of the officers at the scene of the shooting and threatened his life.

Joshua Beal reportedly had attended the funeral of a relative earlier Saturday.

Mount Greenwood is home to many city employees, including police officers.

Dozens of on-duty police officers were on the scene to keep the peace. Officers transported some Black Lives Matters demonstrators from the site, presumably for their own protection. The Blue Lives Matter group outnumbered the Black Lives Matter demonstrators.
