Cubs' Anthony Rizzo, Jason Heyward Win Gold Gloves

(CBS) A Cubs defense that was historically good and helped pave the way for a World Series championship received some recognition Tuesday night.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo and right fielder Jason Heyward each won Gold Gloves from at their respective positions. The awards are voted on by MLB managers and coaches, who can't vote for their own players.

The honor was the first of Rizzo's career. He's the third Cubs first baseman in franchise history to win a Gold Glove, joining Mark Grace (1192, 1993, 1995 and 1996) and Derrek Lee (2005 and 2007).

"It's amazing," Rizzo said in an interview on ESPN. "It means a lot.

"This ranks up there personally with the best award I've ever gotten."

Rizzo made one of the plays of the year in mid-August, when he navigated behind the tarp and climbed the wall ledge down the first-base line at Wrigley Field to make a spectacular catch on a ball headed for the first row of the stands.

Heyward's Gold Glove was the fourth of his career. He also was recognized in 2012, 2014 and 2015. He's the third outfielder in Cubs franchise history to win a Gold Glove, joining Bob Dernier (1984) and Andre Dawson (1987 and 1988).

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell was a finalist for a Gold Glove as well, but that award went to Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. Right-hander Jake Arrieta was also a finalist at pitcher but lost out to Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Greinke.

By advanced metrics, the Cubs had one of the greatest defenses in MLB history this season, turning batted balls into outs at a historic rate, when adjusted for park factor and the era
