Woman Gets 6 Years For Stabbing Girlfriend To Death In Roseland

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman has been sentenced to six years in prison for fatally stabbing her girlfriend during a fight at a Roseland neighborhood gas station on the Far South Side last year.

Eliza Roper, 25, of Calumet City was found guilty of second-degree murder after a bench trial before Judge James Linn on June 14, according to Cook County court records.

On Jan. 31, 2015, Roper was driving with a man and 27-year-old Cierra Moore was following in another vehicle, authorities said at the time.

Both vehicles pulled into a gas station in the 10000 block of South Michigan Avenue about 2:35 p.m., and Moore and the man got into an argument, authorities said.

Moore got back into her car, bumped into the back of Roper's vehicle, and attempted to drive away as the man threw a garbage can at her car.

Moore was unable to drive between Roper's vehicle and the gas pump, and the man began hitting her, authorities said. Surveillance video captured Roper pull out a knife as she walked towards Moore's vehicle.

Moore drove away, but emergency crews found her about a block away with a stab wound to the leg, authorities said.

Moore, of the 3400 block of Hazel Lane in Hazel Crest, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she died at 11:33 p.m., authorities said.

Roper later told her cousin about the attack, authorities said.

Judge Linn sentenced Roper to six years in prison on Nov. 3, according to court records. She will receive credit for 259 days served in the Cook County Jail, and must also serve two years of supervised release.

She was booked into the Logan Correctional Center in downstate Lincoln to begin serving her sentence Wednesday, according to IDOC records.
