Person Questioned In Fatal Stabbing In Chinatown

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police were trying to piece together clues in a stabbing attack that left one man dead and three people wounded Monday night in Chinatown.

Police said detectives were questioning a person of interest in connection with the stabbing Tuesday morning.

It appeared at least two more people were brought in for questioning later Tuesday, as around 9 a.m., police were seen placing two people in the back of an unmarked squad car outside the building where residents said a fight broke out, ending with four people stabbed.

Around 8:15 p.m. Monday, police found a 50-year-old man who had collapsed in the 200 block of West 23rd Street. The man had been stabbed in the back, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died.

A 23-year-old man also was found about a block away from the first man. He had been stabbed in the groin, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Two more victims showed up at Stroger Hospital later Monday night. At least one of them had to undergo surgery, but police said their conditions were stabilized.

People who live in the area where the victims were stabbed said it's not what they've come to expect in Chinatown.

"I live here with my son, and there were lots of police patrol cars and ambulances, so I knew that there was something wrong," Ana Juan-Bustos said. "It really shocked me. This is a safe neighborhood."

"I'm surprised. I can't believe there's a stabbing in Chinatown, but it goes to show you the city can be dangerous," Matthew Kruse said.

Police have not said what they believe was the motive for the attack. Area Central detectives were investigating.
