Trump To Deliver Good News To Indianapolis: Nearly 1,000 Industrial Jobs Won't Leave
(CBS) -- President-elect Donald Trump was scheduled Thursday to appear at the Carrier furnace plant in Indianapolis for a kind of victory lap -- not for winning the White House, but for saving nearly 1,000 factory jobs that were headed to Mexico.
Carrier announced nine months ago that it would relocate these good-paying union jobs to Monterey, Mexico by 2019 -- saving millions in the process.
Carrier workers in Indiana can earn up to $26 an hour, while the company would have paid Mexican workers just $3 an hour in Mexico.
During the campaign, Trump promised to force Carrier to remain in Indianapolis or punish the company if they defied him.
The threats may have worked. Trump reached out directly to the CEO of Carrier's parent firm, United Technology.
Vice president-elect Mike Pence, who's still governor of Indiana, offered what's being called modest state subsidies.
The Obama White House acknowledged it's a clear-cut victory for Trump before he's even taken office.
The overall financial details are yet to be released, and the deal doesn't save all the jobs. Around 400 will be eliminated, but it's still quite a holiday present for the beleaguered workers.
