ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jason Vargas scattered four hits through seven scoreless innings, Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick each hit two-run doubles, and the Los Angeles Angels coaxed a pair of bases-loaded walks out of Jake Peavy in the fourth inning of a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Vargas (3-3) struck out six and walked three while helping the Angels gain a split of the four-game series. The middle of the Chicago lineup — Alex Rios, Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko — were a combined 0 for 8 with a walk against the left-hander, who posted his first victory in six career starts against the White Sox.

Peavy (5-2) gave up four runs, four hits and five walks over six innings after going 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his previous five starts. The 2007 NL Cy Young winner is 0-4 with a 6.06 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

Rios drove in Chicago’s first run with an eighth-inning double against Dane De La Rosa. It extended Rios’ hitting streak to 14 games, eclipsing his previous best in 2006 with Toronto.

Ernesto Frieri was called in to protect a 4-1 lead, trying to get his second four-out save in two days.

The right-hander walked three batters in the ninth this time before notching his ninth save in 10 attempts overall. Frieri gave up a sacrifice fly by Alejandro De Aza before retiring Alexei Ramirez on a flyball to end it.

Kendrick gave Frieri a couple of insurance runs in the eighth with his double inside third base against rookie Brian Omogrosso.

Los Angeles opened the scoring in the third when Chris Iannetta drew a leadoff walk, J.B. Shuck followed with a single and Aybar drove both of them in with his double to right before he was erased in a rundown.

Peavy, who threw 83 of his 117 pitches in the first four innings, walked four more batters in the fourth — including Iannetta and Aybar with the bases loaded — and the Angels increased the margin to 4-0. Two innings later, Peavy struck out the side on 18 pitches.

Iannetta’s second walk was his 14th in a span of 33 plate appearances, including four on Saturday. He has 27 overall, just two fewer than he had last season in 221 plate appearances. His career high is 70, with Colorado in 2011.

NOTES: Peavy had issued eight walks in 45 2-3 innings over his seven previous starts this season. The three-time All-Star, who led the NL in strikeouts in 2005 and 2007 with San Diego, got the 1,800th of his career in the first inning when he caught Mike Trout looking. … INF Chris Nelson was added to the Angels’ 25-man roster, one day after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees. They are the third team he’s been with this season, including Colorado. … The Angels optioned 3B Luis Jimenez to Triple-A Salt Lake, and sent outright RHP Barry Enright to Salt Lake after he cleared waivers. Enright had been designated for assignment on May 16, one day after giving up four runs in two-plus innings against Kansas City in a 9-5 loss. … Dunn returned to the lineup as the designated hitter, after leaving Saturday’s game in the fifth inning because of back spasms. He finished 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk. … The White Sox return home to start an eight-game homestand on Monday against Boston.

Parents, students and teachers marched along the West and South sides, visiting about a dozen of the 54 schools slated for closure.

A teacher at Leif Ericson told a group of protesters she is worried the closures will bring more violence.
“It is very stressful, but with you all out here, you constantly uplift my spirits and the spirits of all the staff members,” the teacher said.

The marches, organized by the Chicago Teachers Union, are slated to continue Monday and end at City Hall, where participants plant o drop off petitions calling for a moratorium on closures to the mayor’s office.

CHICAGO (AP) — Daniel Murphy hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning and the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Sunday for their first series win at Wrigley Field since 2007.

The Mets won two of three on this trip to Chicago.

Murphy hit a leadoff shot against reliever Kyuji Fukikawa (1-1). Murphy has homered twice in three games and has an eight-game hitting streak.

Mets rookie Juan Lagares hit first major league homer, a tying, two-run drive in the seventh against Cubs starter Travis Wood.

Scott Rice (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings. Bobby Parnell earned his sixth save.

Wood hit his first homer of the season and fourth of his career, clearing the left-field bleachers with a drive off Dillon Gee in the fifth to end a scoreless tie.

Wood made his ninth straight quality start, allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked two. The last Cubs starter to begin a season with at least nine straight quality starts was Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown in 1908.

The Mets cut lead to 2-1 in the sixth on a walk to Gee, a wild pitch and an RBI single by David Wright.

The Cubs extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom half on Ryan Sweeney’s leadoff homer. It was his first home run since July 27, 2011, when he played for Oakland.

Gee allowed three runs and eight hits in five innings. He has allowed nine runs in his last nine innings and hasn’t won since May 1.

Sweeney tried to stretch a leadoff double into a triple in the fourth but was thrown out at third. The Cubs also had leadoff doubles in the first and fifth.

NOTES: Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo struck out in the first inning, ending 39 straight plate appearances without a strikeout. … Cubs RHP Carlos Villanueva was available. He moved to the bullpen to make room for RHP Matt Garza, who will come off the disabled list and make his season debut on Tuesday against Pittsburgh. Garza strained a back muscle in spring training. Villanueva (1-3) hasn’t won since April 18. He has made 245 of his 309 career appearances as a reliever. … Murphy hit leadoff for the first time this season and fifth time in his career. He was batting .301 entering Sunday and has primarily hit second this season. “We’ll see how it goes,” manager Terry Collins said. “It might be something we have to consider as we get deeper in the season. He can hit. He can get on base.”

ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) – A 23-year-old man shot in the leg early Sunday morning in a gang-related attack in northwest suburban Elgin, police said.

According to Elgin Police Commander Glenn Theriault, officers were called to the area of Jefferson and Porter streets at 1:35 a.m., where police discovered the shooting victim. He was taken to Sherman Hospital with what police said were not life-threatening injuries.

Investigators from the Elgin Police Department Gang Unit were called to the scene and conducted interviews with witnesses and residents, Theriault said.

According to reports, two groups of people were walking in the area, encountered each other and exchanged words. During the exchange, gunshots were fired from one group to the other group, Theriault said. The group the shots came from “immediately fled the area while the victim group remained on scene,” according to a Elgin police press release.

Detectives believe the incident is gang related and the investigation is continuing, he said.

Elgin police are asking anyone with any information for this incident to contact the Gang Investigation Division at 847-289-2646. Anonymous tips or information can be left thorugh the crime line at 847-695-4195 or by texting 847411 and including ELGINPD in the beginning of the text, along with the message and/or tip information.

Police also responded to the 500 block of Wellington Avenue at 3:36 a.m. for the report of shots fired. No victims or suspects were found at the scene, no one was injured, and police are still investigating the incident. They do not believe the two incidents are related, Theriault said.

“When meeting us for the first time, many people say, ‘I can’t imagine what you’re going through.’ Unfortunately that’s true.”

Nicole Hockley is the mother of 6-year-old Dylan, who died in the Sandy Hook shooting.

“Many other people say there are no words. That’s also true. There are no words.

“But there are actions. The senate must pass Senate Bill 1002 and limit high capacity magazines in Illinois. This is a common sense solution, and it does not infringe on anyone’s Second Amendment rights.”

Nicole Hockley says if the killer at Sandy Hook had had to reload, more people might have escaped.

By Dan Bernstein
CBSChicago.com Senior Columnist

(CBS) — Four NBA teams remain in the running for the title, and the never-say-die Bulls are not one of them because, well, they died.

Throughout their entire lost season of water-treading, we have heard Tom Thibodeau’s Bulls lauded for every available description of effort, too often eschewing real analysis of the technical savvy of their defensive system for lazy odes to just how hard this plucky band of misfits continued to play.

You know who else plays really, really hard?

The Pacers, the Grizzlies, the Spurs and the Heat. All of them. Just as hard.

Indiana also lost last year’s leading scorer to injury, too, so they don’t want to hear any excuses from anywhere else. Excuses like vague implications of a belief in some officiating conspiracy – the one that has resulted in three of the NBA’s seven smallest markets in the conference finals, with Miami the largest remaining at #14 on the list.

Carimi Another Waste

Leave it to the Bears to find another sad, confusing ending for a top draft pick. Gabe Carimi surprised some teammates with his decision to skip OTA’s, choosing to work out independently. With the handwriting seemingly on the wall, it’s mind-boggling how much needless expenditure of time, resources and energy has been poured into the tackle position.

Chris Williams was taken 14th overall in 2008 despite concerns over a bad back. He was soon having a herniated disc repaired, then was bad and was cut. On the other side of the line, meanwhile, free-agent signee Orlando Pace was turnstyling into retirement. Then the parade of Frank Omiyale, Kevin Shaffer and John St. Clair, up to J’Marcus Webb. Sorry you had to read that.

So they were chasing when they selected Carimi 29th overall in 2011, no matter the red flags about a knee problem. He was subsequently hurt, subsequently bad, demoted to guard, and now out of the plans. That meant big money for Jermon Bushrod, and yet another top pick on a tackle prospect, that could have been otherwise used.

This is not how it’s done.

Q Now Gets To Coach

The only thing nice about the Blackhawks’ face-plant against the Red Wings is that an NHL coach-of-the-year finalist may have his voice heard for more important things than Viktor Stalberg’s playing time. His stars got pushed around by a decidedly toughened-up Detroit team now emboldened headed back home for game three, and he needs his stars to be stars to keep an overmatched opponent from extending the series longer than it should go.

It was the perfect game to point out the silliness of the “hits” statistic, too, as the clearly more physical team was outhit by the losers 36-26. That’s what happens when a puck-possession team doesn’t have the puck. If the ‘Hawks are playing their game, they are passing, skating and scoring instead of running into people.

The Wings were probably going to get one, though I thought it more likely that it would be at Joe Louis, where the rules would allow Mike Babcock better control over line matchups.

White Sox Still Maddening

First they began the season by kicking the ball around the field like Real Madrid, then added to their problems by celebrating the anniversary of the 1983 team by running the bases like Jerry Dybzinski.

After a four game winning streak, their pitchers issue ten walks in a 12-9 loss and the offense leaves twelve runners stranded, including six against fleshy punching-bag Joe Blanton who was just asking to be lit up again. This is not a tight baseball operation at the moment, allowing teams avoidable advantages of extra outs and free baserunners that will keep them on the wrong side of .500 as they continue.

Big Thanks

Last night’s Campfire Ball at Venue One raised needed funds for the One Step Programs for kids with cancer, run by Children’s Oncology Services. Not only did Boers and Bernstein listeners raise $10,000 in ten days to get an equal matching donation, the anonymous donor was so impressed that he/she tacked on a bonus $10,000, resulting in $30,000 total.

I talked to numerous listeners who bought tickets and attended the spectacular gala, which we expect to have reached $100,000 when all the counting is done. On behalf of all of us on the board of directors, a warm, sincere thank you is in order for all who contributed to this great cause: making kids with cancer as happy as possible, ensuring that their diagnosis does not keep them from experiencing the simple joys of childhood.

Samantha Maglaya says her family had just gotten home Friday afternoon and one of her children let their dog out in the backyard in the 5800 block of North Oketo.

Moments later, she says she heard gunshots and saw an off-duty cop still holding his gun and her four-month-old pit bull bleeding.

“I ran to my dog and my kids were standing all around him screaming and crying,” said Maglaya

The officer told police he was protecting his five-year-old son riding his bike and the animal broke loose started chasing him.

Maglaya estimated that Maximus weighed about 35 pounds. She says there was no child around, just the officer.

“There was no son there. The whole time I was holding my dog and he was bleeding all over us and the kids are screaming and crying, his son was not there,” said Maglaya.

The independent police review authority is investigating.

CHICAGO (WBBM) – Dogs bite an estimated 4.7 million people every year in the United States and many of the victims are young children. Expert say public awareness and education are key to preventing biting incidents and the full court press is on this week during National Dog Bite Prevention Week.

“Nearly a million people seek medical attention each year for dog bites,” says Dr. Julia Georgesen from Blum Animal Hospital in Chicago. Georgesen is also resident pet expert on Newsradio 780’s Eye on Pets program.

She says pet owners and non-pet owners both share responsibility when it comes to preventing dog bites.

“Socialize your puppy at a young age to be comfortable in new situations with new animals and with new people. Train your dog to understand basic commands. That helps it develop trust with you the owner. Provide plenty of exercise and stimulation to keep your dog mentally stimulated and healthy.”

Dogs should be spayed or neutered, kept on a leash at all times and Georgesen says make sure your pet has all of its shots including its rabies vaccination. Also avoid wrestling with your dog or playing tug-of-war with it because those activities can cause aggression.

For non-pet owners, Georgesen says always respect a dog’s space and observe its body language before you approach.

“If they’re licking you and if they’re coming up to you and not shying away, those are things to look for. If they’ve got their fur up and their tale between their legs, they are scared or frightened. If you are approached by a dog and they want to sniff you, stand still and speak calmly and firmly. The worst thing to do is to turn and run away.”

Georgesen says never approach a strange dog. “Ask permission before you try to pet a dog or before you allow your children to approach a dog. You don’t want to run past a dog or disturb a dog when it’s sleeping or eating.”

When you encounter a dog remember to WAIT – W-A-I-T. Wait to see if the dog is with its owner and wait to see if it’s friendly. Ask the owner for permission to pet the dog. Invite the dog to sniff you. Touch the dog gently when you pet it.

And remember, any dog can bite regardless of its size or breed.

The $425 million project will mean changes in the daily commute for thousands of riders.

For the first time since 1993, Red Line trains will operate over Green Line tracks into the Englewood terminal at 63rd/Ashland. Free express shuttle buses will run from the shuttered 95th, 87th, 79th and 69th Red Line stations to the Green Line Garfield station, where it will be free to board throughout the next five months. Another free shuttle will run between the Cermak/Chinatown station and Roosevelt.

But CTA President Forrest Claypool is urging you to study the rest of the transit map.

“The main people need to know is that if they come to the Red Line today they’ll have an express option to 55th Street or a local shuttle option but maybe, depending on where they live, there’s another easier, faster, more convenient option,” he said.

CTA also is increasing service on much of its South Side bus grid and Metra is adding stops on some of its Electric District trains.

About 2:20 a.m., a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am was heading westbound on 102nd Street approaching Sangamon Street, when a 2004 Grand Am was northbound on Sangamon, approaching 102nd Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.

The Grand Am traveling down 102nd Street went through a stop sign and failed to reduce its speed, and crashed into the other car, Sullivan said. The two cars then crashed into the porch of a home at 102nd and Sangamon.

A 23-year-old woman who was the driver of the Grand Am that was struck by the other car was killed in the crash, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fire Media Affairs. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office had been notified of the fatality but was not releasing any information on the victim as of late Sunday morning. The others injured were reportedly in their early- to mid-20s, according to police.

The four injured were all taken in serious to critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County or Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Fire Media.

Police had sent out an alert Sunday morning seeking the parents or guardians after the boy, believed to be between 18 and 24 months old, was found in the 1300 block of South Fairfield Avenue.

The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital “as a precautionary measure” to make sure that he was in good health, but he had not suffered any sort of injuries, Sullivan said.

It was not yet known as of Sunday morning if any charges would be filed in connection to the case, police said.

CHICAGOSTMW) — One number in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing was the difference for a dozen Illinois players between being $10,000 richer and living the life of a multi-millionaire.

The record-setting grand prize for Saturday night’s drawing was $590,500,000 and just one player, who bought their ticket in Florida, matched all the numbers to collect that prize, according to the Illinois Lottery.

The winning numbers in Saturday night’s drawing were: 10 – 13 – 14 – 22 and 52, and the Power Ball number was 11.

Among Illinois players, 12 people matched four of five numbers and the Power Ball, and they will each collect $10,000, according to the Illinois Lottery. Another 485 Illinois players managed to match four of five numbers without the Power Ball, and they will each receive $100.

The next Powerball drawing, with a jackpot of $40 million, will be held on Wednesday.

(STMW) — One adult and 11 juveniles were arrested Saturday night after police responded to groups of teens running through traffic around North Michigan Avenue on the Gold Coast.

The incident around Michigan Avenue was a “minor disturbance” and those arrested were taken into custody for obstructing traffic and being reckless, police News Affairs Sergeant Antoinette Ursitti said.

Officers had responded to reports of between 40 and 60 teens running around in “flash mobs” near the Water Tower, Oak Street Beach, the intersection of Dearborn Street and Delaware Place, and Clark Street and Delaware Place, another police source said.

No fights broke out, and no one was injured, authorities said.

The disturbance occurred hours after Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation imposing potentially stiffer prison terms for people who organize violent events via social media.

The Mag Mile and Ford City Mall have been recent sites of violent “flash mob” activity.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Alberto Callaspo hit a three-run homer in Los Angeles’ five-run seventh inning, and the Angels beat the White Sox 12-9 on Saturday to end Chicago’s four-game winning streak.

Callaspo also had a pair of sacrifice flies to give him five RBIs on the day. Mark Trumbo added his 10th homer for Los Angeles, which finished with 17 hits.

Robert Coello (1-0) recorded his first major league victory, retiring all five batters he faced and striking out three after relieving Joe Blanton after another ineffective performance.

Hector Gimenez had four hits and three RBIs for the White Sox, who allowed only 10 runs during their winning streak. Paul Konerko and Alexei Ramirez had three hits apiece, and Adam Dunn drove in two runs before leaving in the fifth because of back spasms

Chicago was only down by one before Los Angeles broke it open in the seventh against Donnie Veal, who was just recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Callaspo greeted the left-hander with a drive to left for his third homer , and No. 9 hitter J.B. Shuck made it 10-4 with a two-run double.

Nate Jones (0-4), who came in after Hector Santiago was knocked out in the fourth, allowed four runs and three hits in 3 1-3 innings. Veal was charged with the same totals while recording just one out.

The White Sox got back in the game with five runs in the eighth, including a three-run shot by Gimenez off closer Ernesto Frieri. Konerko and Dayan Viciedo each had an RBI single Garrett Richards.

But Los Angeles gave Frieri a couple of insurance runs in the bottom half on Howie Kendrick’s RBI single and Callaspo’s second sacrifice fly, and the right-hander struck out the side in the ninth to get his eighth save in nine attempts.

Blanton gave up four runs and 11 hits in 4 1-3 innings and is 0-7 with a 6.62 ERA in his first nine starts with the Angels, who signed him to a two-year, $15 million contract in December.

Coello came on with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and struck out Ramirez and Rios. The Angels grabbed a 5-4 lead in the bottom half on Trumbo’s RBI double and Callaspo’s sacrifice fly. Albert Pujols started the rally with an opposite-field double down the first base line against the shift.

Santiago was charged with three runs and four hits in 3 1-3 innings. He issued a season-high four walks and struck out two.

Chicago scored four times in the fourth inning, but the Angels responded with three in the bottom half. Trumbo got the Angels on the board with a leadoff shot over both bullpens in left field. They loaded the bases for the second straight inning with a single by Callaspo and two walks, and Santiago forced in a run with a walk to Shuck on his 80th pitch.

That brought in Jones, fresh off his loss to Los Angeles reliever Ryan Brasier on Friday night in the Angels’ annual cow-milking contest. Erick Aybar trimmed the margin to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly on the right-hander’s first delivery.

NOTES: Callaspo came within one RBI of tying his career best, set on April 18, 2010, at Minnesota while playing for Kansas City. … Angels RF Josh Hamilton was in manager Mike Scioscia’s original lineup, but got scratched with no other explanation than a day off to recharge, according to a club spokesman. Hamilton hit for Brendan Harris in the seventh and singled to bring his average up to .214. … Hamilton was replaced defensively by Trumbo — who had been slotted as the designated hitter. Instead, Pujols was shifted from 1B to DH and Harris was inserted at 1B.

CHICAGO (STMW) – A Cook County Jail inmate faces new charges in connection with a 2012 murder and a separate 2011 shooting in south suburban Robbins, the Cook County Sheriff’s office announced Saturday.

Antwaan Bryant, 33, was booked into the jail in December 2012 on unrelated charges of attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and violating bond, according to the sheriff’s office.

An investigation by sheriff’s police and Robbins police has since uncovered that Bryant was allegedly one of two gunmen who shot and killed a man in the 13400 block of Clifton Park Avenue on June 29, 2012, a sheriff’s office release said.

Bryant allegedly pointed a gun into the passenger side window of a car about 4:15 a.m. and demanded money, the release said. He and an unknown second suspect fatally shot the car’s occupant after the victim tried to grab the gun and fight back.

Antwon D. Childs, 21, of Harvey, was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital roughly half an hour later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Bryant is also newly charged in connection with a separate July 30, 2011, shooting at a gas station in the 13500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, also in Robbins, the release said.

In that incident, Bryant allegedly approached a person with a gun about 3:10 a.m., and shot the victim in the back when he tried to run away, the release said. The victim had tried but failed to wrestle the gun away before he ran.

Bryant, of Robbins, was ordered held on $2 million bond for the murder charge, and $500,000 for the aggravated battery with a firearm charge, the release said.

He will next appear in court May 21 at the Markham courthouse.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Oxbow has won the Preakness, ruining Orb’s bid to capture the Triple Crown.

Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 15th Triple Crown win, the most in horse racing history.

“I get paid to spoil dreams,” Lukas said in an interview with NBC moments after the race. “Unfortunately we go over here and you can’t mail ‘em in. It’s a different surface and a different time. You gotta line ‘em up and win ‘em.

Orb finished fourth. The Kentucky Derby winner was a 3-5 favorite in Saturday’s race, but he became another casualty of starting on the rail in the Preakness. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.

Orb’s five-race winning streak ended on an overcast, windy day at Pimlico Race Course. The brown colt had not lost since Nov. 24.

Oxbow was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, where he made a move for the lead in the final turn but faded.

In the Preakness, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens took control at the outset and never relinquished the advantage, winning this race for the third time in his career.

Oxbow covered the 1 3/16th miles in 1:57.54. He went off as a 15-1 underdog and paid $32.80, $12 and $8.80.

Itsmyluckyday finished second and paid $7.80 and $5. Mylute paid $5.20 to show.

Mylute, with Rosie Napravnik in the saddle, came in fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Racing at the track where she earned her first career victory, Napravnik was attempting to become the first female jockey to win the Preakness.

Lukas had three entrants in the nine-horse race. Titletown Five and Will Take Charge did not finish in the money, but the 77-year-old Hall of Fame trainer nevertheless made it to the winner’s circle.

Oxbow bested Itsmyluckyday by 1 3/4 lenths.

For Lukas, the victory broke a tie with “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons for most Triple Crown wins.

It meant a lot to Stevens, too.

“It’s so special,” the jockey said. “Wayne, he supported me. Put me on my first Triple Crown winner. A lot of people were trying to get me off. He was the first guy to call me up and said ‘I’m going to have a colt for you. His name is Oxbow.’”

Stevens added, “Wayne is like a brother, coach, a father figure to me.”

Stevens almost couldn’t believe how well it went.

“We came in here with a lot of confidence,” he said. “When I hit the half-mile pole, I told myself ‘Are you kidding me?’ ‘Is this happening?’”

By Adam Hoge-

UNITED CENTER (CBS) The Blackhawks said they would be ready for a stronger, faster Red Wings team in Game 2.

They just didn’t play like it.

In fact, Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Red Wings was their worst performance since their 24-game points streak ended in Colorado Mar. 8. Every other loss this season was by two goals or less.

“Across the board we should all assume some responsibility that we have to be much better than that,” Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said after the game. “I thought our game was way off as far as the pace that was needed. And we weren’t smart in certain areas.”

Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock promised a better effort after Game 1, when he indicated that the travel back and forth to Anaheim in the first round had taken its toll on his team. It appears he was right.

“It was great that we had an off day,” Babcock said after Saturday’s win. “It was unbelievable how well that worked out for us. Now we’re freshened up. Series on.”

The series is on.

The Red Wings now have home-ice advantage as the series shifts back to Detroit and you can argue it’s now the Blackhawks, not the Wings, that need an extra day off before the next game.

After a pretty even first period, the Wings dominated the second frame, controlling the puck for most of the 20 minutes and scoring two goals to take a 2-1 lead. It got worse as the period went along and while the Blackhawks came out in the third period with a better pace, the Wings still scored the only two goals of the period, putting the game away.

It was a rare game where the league’s best defensive unit didn’t play up to par, but Quenneville didn’t think that was where the game was lost.

“We lost the momentum of that game by what we didn’t do more so on the attack and in the offensive zone,” he said.

Indeed, the offense failed to put pucks on net like they did in Game 1 (the Hawks only had 20 shots all game) and they committed turnovers in the offensive zone that led to odd-man rushes the other way. That, combined with a defense that struggled and a goaltender (Corey Crawford) who was shaky at best, and the Blackhawks didn’t have much of a chance in Game 2.

The Hawks’ top line of Jonthan Toews, Marian Hossa and Brandon Saad particularly struggled, with Toews getting bottled up by Henrik Zetterberg for most of the game. And afterward, a frustrated captain turned his attention toward the referees, saying the Wings got away with some interference in front of the net.

“That’s something we need to know and maybe do to them a little bit,” Toews said. “It’s just tough to understand sometimes why we get roughing penalties and hooking penalties, whatever it is, and that doesn’t go both ways.”

The end result was a puck-loving team hardly possessing the puck at all.

“They have to find a way to fight through it,” Quenneville said. “We got to be harder in the tough areas, particularly at their net. We didn’t really look to shoot it. We seemed to be on the outside.”

Now, the Blackhawks must adjust before Game 3 Monday night in Detroit.

“It’s not out of frustration it’s just trying to frustrate their team,” Toews said. “That’s something we need to do a little bit more. They’re trying to do it to our top couple lines and we can do a little bit more of it. We’re letting them skate around with the puck a little bit too much.”

While Toews is probably right that some calls were missed Saturday, changing their ways could be dangerous. Adjustments are one thing, but skating the fine line of what’s legal and not legal is not what the Blackhawks do best. What they really need to do is just play their game and play it better. Saturday was a rare poor effort. They were sleepy at times in the first round against the Wild, but they didn’t make the kind of mistakes that littered the ice against the Wings Saturday.

Odd scheduling and inconsistent officiating are a part of the obstacles and ups and downs of a playoff series, no matter how much talent you have. Those are the things you have to battle through.

That danger now is that the Red Wings are getting better and have been playing at a playoff-like pace for weeks after they had to battle just to get into the postseason. The Blackhawks are clearly the more talented team, but they can’t afford to open the door for the Wings.

“They got a real good club and they’ve been good all year,” Babcock said. “We got a real good club now and we haven’t been good all year. We just got better. We just kept getting better so we’re confident in our group and we really think we can be in this series and we’re excited about the opportunity.”

That’s a mindset the Blackhawks need to erase. Quickly.

CHICAGO (AP) — Scott Feldman pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning and drove in two runs with a big two-out double, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 8-2 on Saturday.

The Cubs have won five of seven and can win three straight series for the first time with a victory on Sunday. Anthony Rizzo had two hits and his first home run since signing a seven-year contract on Monday.

Chicago was going for its first shutout since a victory over Colorado on Aug. 26, but Rick Ankiel broke it up with a two-run homer off Hector Rondon with one out in the ninth.

Feldman (4-3) allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked one in 6 2-3 innings. The right-hander improved to 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA in five games since he lost each of his first three starts in his first year with the Cubs.

Mets starter Jeremy Hefner lost his fifth straight decision to start the season. Hefner (0-5) was charged with four runs and five hits in four innings in his shortest start since he pitched four innings against Washington on April 20.

New York, which was trying to win three straight games for the second time this season, squandered a couple of chances to get off to a fast start.

The Mets put runners on the corners in the first when Ike Davis flied out for the second out. David Wright then stole second, but David DeJesus hauled in Lucas Duda’s fly ball to deep left-center at the wall to end the inning.

New York had runners on second and third again in the second, but Mike Baxter popped out to shortstop to end the inning.

Chicago then scored four times in the fourth inning. Luis Valbuena had a sacrifice fly and Welington Castillo singled in Alfonso Soriano. After Darwin Barney flied out for the second out, Feldman came up with a two-run double to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.

Rizzo tacked on his 10th homer in the fifth and Nate Schierholtz went deep in Chicago’s three-run eighth inning.

Daniel Murphy went 2 for 4 for New York and is batting .500 (14 for 28) in his last seven games. But Davis continued to struggle, going 0 for 4 to fall to 4 for 39 over his last 11 games.

The Mets have scored 26 runs over their last nine games.

NOTES: Saturday was the 700th game between the Mets and Cubs. Chicago leads the series 352-348. . The Mets are appealing to Major League Baseball to get the second earned run charged Friday to Matt Harvey changed to an unearned run. . Chicago announced before Saturday’s game that Matt Garza is returning from the disabled list and starting Tuesday in Pittsburgh, while Carlos Villanueva is heading to the bullpen. . Baxter started in right field for the Mets instead of Jordany Valdespin. Mets manager Terry Collins said he made the decision because Baxter was better at facing an off-speed pitcher like Feldman. . Sunday’s pitching matchup is the Mets’ Dillon Gee (2-5, 6.13 ERA) against Travis Wood (4-2, 2.03 ERA).

CHICAGO (AP) — Damien Brunner and Brendan Smith scored in the second period and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 Saturday in Game 2 to even their Western Conference semifinal series.

It was a strong response by the Red Wings after Chicago handled them easily in the series opener, 4-1.

Just as the Blackhawks did in Game 1, Detroit took control in the second period and put the game away in the third. Now, the Red Wings have a chance to take the lead when this series between Original Six rivals shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Monday.

Patrick Kane gave Chicago a 1-0 lead late in the first, but did things ever change after that.

Brunner tied it when he deflected a wrist shot by Jakub Kindl early in the second, and Smith gave the Red Wings the lead when he scored off a feed from Henrik Zetterberg on a 3-on-1 late in the second.

Johan Franzen made it 3-1 in the third when he fired a rising shot past Crawford after a perfect pass from Jonathan Ericsson in the Detroit zone. And Valtteri Filppula closed out the scoring with 7:57 left in the game.

That was enough for Jimmy Howard, who stopped 19 shots.

Crawford made 26 saves for Chicago but the Red Wings were simply a step faster in this one after the Blackhawks ran away from them in the opener.

The Blackhawks still struck first thanks to a lucky bounce after Detroit’s Kyle Quincey sprawled out to block a pass across the slot by Patrick Sharp that was intended for Kane on a 2-on-1 rush. The puck bounced to a trailing Michal Handzus, who immediately fed it to a wide open Kane in the right slot. He fired it into the net at the 14:05 mark for a 1-0 lead and his first goal of the playoffs.

About a minute later, with the Red Wings on a power play, Crawford made a nice save on Zetterberg before Pavel Datsyuk ripped a shot high off the right post.

Detroit tied it early in the second when a wrist shot by Kindl from just inside the blue line deflected off Brunner and past a screened Crawford, who didn’t even react as the puck went past him on the glove side.

But Chicago’s goalie had the fans chanting his name midway through the period with two great saves, stopping Zetterberg from the slot and sprawling out to foil Daniel Cleary on the rebound.

The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead with 3:52 left in the second, when Zetterberg dished to Smith on a two-on-one rush after Chicago’s Niklas Hjalmarsson fell racing him for a loose puck.

Notes: LW Drew Miller was in the Red Wings’ lineup for the first time since April 20. He had been sidelined by a broken bone in his right hand. … F Viktor Stalberg was a healthy scratch for the Blackhawks, just as he was in Game 1. “I don’t like changing too much, but we wanted to get (Dave Bolland) in our lineup,” coach Joel Quenneville said before the game. “It’s comparable to what we’ve done during season. But we’ll see.
Social media is a great way to keep track of your friends and share photos, but unfortunately it’s being used by criminals too. State Senator Kwame Raoul is one of the authors of SB 1005 and says when they hit downtown Chicago it hurts business, and that hurts everyone

“We have people coming in from all over the world and we don’t want to scare them from coming in,” said Raoul.

State Representative Christian Mitchell says gang leaders used it to organize their troops

“It is happening in real time. Somebody sends a tweet. 20 minutes later, someone is laying in a pool of blood on the street and there is no time to intervene,” said Mitchell.

The bill allows a judge to add one to three years to the sentence of those convicted of using social media or texts to organize crime.

The senate approved it this week but Quinn says he still hasn’t seen it. He says he’ll be open minded about it.

“I think it is important to review every bill that arrives at my desk. I did that with a bill that we just signed. We try to expedite legislation as quickly as we can. It hasn’t arrived yet. When it does, we will act promptly.

It would create a four year pilot program that would allow doctors to prescribe patients with one of 42 serious or chronic conditions up to 2.5 ounces of pot every two weeks.

Quinn says he’s talked to veterans who say they need it to ease pain.

WHEATON, Ill. (STMW) – A poorly secured cell phone in a west suburban hospital washroom that a man had allegedly set up to secretly videotape women in the toilet area was discovered by a woman when the phone fell to the washroom floor on Friday. She alerted police, who then arrested and charged a 49-year-old Franklin Park man with unlawful videotaping.

That man, Salvador Perez, of the 2500 block of Sonia Avenue in Franklin Park, was being held at the DuPage County Jail Saturday morning, after DuPage County Judge Michael Wolfe set his bond at $150,000.

Prosecutors allege that on Friday, Perez positioned his cell phone under the sink of a uni-sex bathroom at Elmhurst Hospital. According to a release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office, Perez positioned the phone so that the video camera on the phone would record the toilet area of the bathroom. After putting the phone in the bathroom, Perez allegedly activated the video record function and left the bathroom. That same day, while a woman was using the bathroom, the cell phone fell from beneath the sink. The woman alerted authorities, resulting in the charges against Perez.

Perez was charged with unlawful videotaping, a Class 4 felony, the release said.

“The allegations against Mr. Perez Are very disturbing,” DuPage County State’s Atorney Robert Berlin said. “Invading another person’s privacy in such a manner will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law.”

Perez’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 24 in front of Judge George Bakalis, the state’s attorney’s office said. As an additional condition of bond, Perez will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device should he post bond.

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Garza is set to come off the disabled list and make his first start of the season for the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday against Pittsburgh.

Right-hander Carlos Villanueva is heading to the Chicago bullpen.

Garza hasn’t pitched in the majors this season after suffering a strained back muscle in spring training. In his fourth rehab start, the right-hander pitched six shutout innings for Triple-A Iowa and struck out six.

“I think when they told me to go get six and I got six, it was enough lobbying than I could argue,” Garza said Saturday. “I’m just excited and I’m just ready to do my part.”

Manager Dale Sveum said Garza won’t be allowed to throw more than 90 pitches in his season debut. Garza hasn’t started for the Cubs since July 21 when he suffered a stress reaction in his right elbow and missed the rest of the year.

“It was a grind mentally,” Garza said about the layoff. “Physically I can do anything, but the mental part was the tough part. It was one setback after another. It was like, ‘Man, just keep going, keep going, there’s a prize at the end of it. I’m just happy I’m here at the end of it and can’t wait until Tuesday.”

Villanueva got off to a strong start for the Cubs but has struggled recently. Over his first four starts, Villanueva (1-3) gave up five earned runs, but he has allowed 18 over his last four. He hasn’t won since April 18. In his last start, he allowed 12 hits and seven earned against Colorado.

Villanueva has made 245 of his 309 career appearances as a reliever.

“He’s always been in this type of role, the swing man, so to speak,” Sveum said. “So he understands it and he accepts it. Very professional about the whole thing.”

Garza’s return could boost an already strong Cubs rotation. Entering Saturday, the Cubs’ 25 quality starts was fourth in the National League, and Chicago’s starters have held opponents to a .226 batting average, the best in the majors.

“I’m excited and happy I don’t have to rehab again,” Garza said. “This actually means something, so I can’t wait. It’s been 10 months in the making. I’m excited to get back out there.”

The problem, says Dillard, is that burglary rings are breaking into homes and stealing gold and silver that can be melted down and sold to so-called “Cash for Gold” places. But—he says—these stores are not required to check identification or keep records of who sold them the precious metals. So he’s proposing legislation.

“We’re going to set up a task force working with coin dealers and the folks that own these places to try to set up a system where at least the police, like pawn shops, would be able to try to go back and figure out and have a trail as you who burglarized your most sacred place which is your own personal home,” said Dillard.

Dillard says he first proposed restrictions a year ago when a constituent who’d been burglarized discovered Cash for Gold places don’t have to keep records or require Identification. Dillard’s own home has been burglarized since then. He wants a task force to design tighter laws for such places.

Pawn Shops are required to keep records.

“For too long, there has been an assault on our public schools, public services and public property. This has gone too far. We will not let you take away our children’s schools.

SKOKIE, Ill. (STMW) — Skokie Police Chief Tony Scarpelli said Sunday police still have no suspect in custody in connection with a shooting Friday night near just outside of Westfield’s Old Orchard Shopping Center in the northern suburb.

Scarpelli said the police are continuing to follow all investigative leads in the case.

A young man was wounded in the shooting outside the Old Orchard Shopping Center. Skokie police responded about 9:45 p.m. to a 911 call of shots fired near the 4800 block of Golf Road, a release from police said.

When officers got to the scene they found a male juvenile lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was being treated.

Scarpelli said the victim underwent surgery Saturday and as far as he knew the victim remains in fair condition.

A carnival was being held at the mall, near the location of the shooting, this weekend, but it is unclear whether the victim was attending the carnival.

Police ask that if anyone has any information or knowledge regarding the shooting, to contact the Skokie Police Department at (847) 982-5900.

By Adam Hoge-

UNITED CENTER (CBS) As expected, Viktor Stalberg will not play in Game 2 against the Red Wings today as Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville will likely stick with the same lineup that worked in Game 1.

Stalberg was benched in the first game against the Wings as Quenneville looked to spark his team, while also asking his third-line winger for more intensity.

It’s possible Stalberg is out of the doghouse, but Quenneville rarely changes his lines after a win and he liked how Daniel Carcillo played in the 4-1 win.

“I thought he gave us some energy and some purpose,” Quenneville said.

Saturday’s game is a rare Noon start in the playoffs, but Quenneville doesn’t think it should have much of an impact on his team.

“I think the guys, once they get in, they don’t mind playing in the afternoon,” the head coach said.

Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock admitted after Game 1 that their recent travel had taken a toll on his team and may have contributed to them running out of gas in the third period. The Blackhawks expect the Wings to have their legs under them a little bit more today.

“We expect them to be better and we know we have to be better as well,” Quenneville said. “It’s a progression in a series, the games become more intense in importance and starts are important so let’s be sure we’re respectful for what they are going to do and expect a harder game.”

ORLAND HILLS, Ill. (STMW) – A former part-time Orland Hills police officer is facing up to 15 years in prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed a 20-year-old Homewood man.

Robert C. Caputo, 62, pleaded guilty Friday to a felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence for a fiery 2010 crash on Interstate 80 near New Lenox.

Caputo, who worked for the police department in the 1990s, faces three to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced June 25 by Will County Judge Edward Burmila.

DaVon Pitts’ Chevrolet Malibu got a flat tire when he was headed home from work Sept. 12, 2010. He had parked on the left shoulder of eastbound I-80, and was on his cell phone when his vehicle was hit about 4:20 p.m. by a pickup truck driven by Caputo, Assistant State’s Attorney Fred Harvey said.

The impact forced Pitts’ car into the right shoulder ditch, where it burst into flames, Harvey said.

Caputo’s truck went airborne over the concrete median and hit an oncoming vehicle, he said.

Pitts, who was working two part-time jobs and taking classes at Prairie State College, was identified later that night by his dental records, Harvey said.

As Harvey read the facts of the crash, Pitts’ mother, Regina Pitts, audibly sobbed.

She and other members of Pitts’ family declined to comment on Caputo’s plea.

“This is certainly a tragic accident, which Mr. Caputo takes full responsibility for,” said attorney Paul Napolski, who represents Caputo with Brian Telander and Brad Telander.
