The Akita dogs were spotted along the shoulder of the Bishop Ford near 115th Street around 6 a.m. Illinois State Police said a woman and her daughter had been searching for the dogs all night, and when they learned the dogs were on the Bishop Ford, the daughter drove to get them.
Many people have called the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge since Sunday, hoping to adopt one of the eight dogs taken there from the Dolton Animal Hospital.
“They seem pretty happy right now,” said veterinarian Dr. Andy Orals. “We’re all getting kind of attached to them.”
Firefighters brought the animals — some unconscious — out of the building in blankets and used oxygen masks specially made for pets to attempt to revive them.
