Honorary Street Name
A 12-year-old girl, whose four-year struggle with cancer galvanized her neighborhood and inspired a wave of support over the last several weeks, has died.
A street in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood was being dedicated Friday afternoon to a 12-year-old girl who has battled cancer for a third of her life.
The street naming played out like a funeral, with tributes to the former mayor on the steps of Gary City Hall, where the “Mayor Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Clay Memorial Highway” sign was unveiled Friday.
John “Vietnam” Nguyen is the first Vietnamese American to get such an honor. He’s also the youngest person to get an honorary street name, and the first hip-hop artist.
The late Bernie Mac is getting a special honor in Chicago.
Chicago Police Officer John Lyons had the 7200 block of West Summerdale Avenue named on the Northwest Side in his honor in a Dec. 11 ceremony.
