Brendan Gibbons drilled a 37-yard field goal down the middle in overtime to lift No. 13 Michigan to a 23-20 victory over 17th-ranked Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday night.
The Fighting Irish lost the ball five times for the second straight week, letting Michigan beat them 35-31 Saturday night on Denard Robinson’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree with 2 seconds left.
Illinois kept close in points, even got ahead 45-38 with 11:35 left of the fourth quarter. Michigan tied the game with less than two minutes left and the two teams went into three over times.
